The Best Nursery in the US
The best nursery in the entire United States isn't the best because of their nursery stock. It's because of their owner.
Laguna Hills Nursery is a pretty small nursery in Santa Ana, California. It's in the heart of Orange County in an unassuming spot next to an In-N-Out Burger. This nursery might not be the most known or the biggest, but its the best because of Gary Matsuoka, the nursery owner.
Gary has become a little Youtube famous over the past couple years for offering some contrarian advice on how to grow plants. This is what makes him and his nursery the best in the country. He is actually trying to help people grow better.
Is Compost the Right Soil?
Most growers think that they need to grow their plants in compost or wood bark. Gary has shown us that this is not true. It's probably causing a lot of harm to your plants if you grow this way.
Through all of his own trials and tribulations, Gary found that plants prefer to grow in inorganic soils that mimic native, mineral soils. This makes complete sense when you think about it. No plants in Nature are growing in compost. They're growing in ground-up rocks.
Gary found that making soils like mineral soils results in long-term plant health. He uses materials like peat moss, pumice, sand and perlite to create a lightweight potting mix that promotes airflow, holds moisture and does not rot! If you are fortunate to live around the area, then you can just buy the soil from their nursery. Other places around the region are carrying it now, too.
If you cannot find the soil, you can follow the recipe and make it yourself. The components are usually easy to find.
