Growing Goji Berries in Potting Mix

Another plant that seems to really enjoy a potting mix inert ingredients is goji berry.

I potted these up a few weeks ago and they have literally grown several inches since.

These are the shortest days of the year too, so it’s really interesting to see so much growth on them right now.

Granted, these are growing in a greenhouse, but I am still surprised they took off so quickly.

The potting mix consists of 3 parts pumice to 1 part peat moss with some organic fertilizer sprinkled on the top after planting.

The high amount of pumice promotes oxygen to the root zone, which helps the plant absorb water and nutrients more effectively.

Keeping peat moss to 25% of the mix ensures they won’t stay too wet too long but they still do have moisture hanging around their roots.

An ideal mix would probably be more like 5 parts pumice to 1 peat moss so that peat is only 16% or so of the soil.

This container soil will still hold plenty of moisture but promote the most aeration for the best growth.

I’ll start feeding these plants with DG Foliage Pro in the next week or so to give it everything it needs nutrient-wise.

You don’t have to add compost but if you did want to use some, always add on top. Compost needs to stay on the top of the root zone so it doesn’t promote root rot.
