Organic Fertilizers That Will Lead to Better Soil Year After Year

Organic fertilizers can include a wide range of products. We don’t particularly like to recommend any animal agriculture byproducts because they prop up the CAFO industry. This includes blood meal, bone meal, feather meal, fish meal, etc. We instead like to recommend more renewable and humane organic fertilizers that will do the same thing as industry byproducts: feed your soil.

Meals made from seeds and plants are effective at feeding the soil foodweb. We like to use products like neem seed meal, alfalfa meal, and kelp meal.

You’ll see we recommend using mineralized bat guano. This is a different product than the run-of-the-mill bat guano you usually will find. This mineralized guano is left over long after bats have left the caves. It is much more ethical to harvest mineralized guano than fresh guano because no bats are harmed in the process. This is the only guano product we recommend.

We also don’t recommend using cottonseed meal. Though the product would be very good for the soil foodweb, we haven’t found a trustworthy option that is certified organic. Being certified organic is the bare minimum we look for when using products in our garden.
